Harmer's spin and Rabada's fire: South Africa beat Australia by 176 runs at Newlands
The final morning at Newlands produced a dramatic finish as South Africa beat Australia by 176 runs to clinch the decisive Test and the series 2-1. Simon Harmer was the central figure with the ball, taking 6 for 16 in 21.1 overs in Australia's second innings, while Kagiso Rabada set the tone early on the last day by removing the top order.
South Africa batted first and posted 329, built around half-centuries from Aiden Markram, Marques Ackerman and David Bedingham. Australia responded strongly with 429. Josh Inglis scored a century and Alex Carey made 80 off 168 balls, helping the visitors take a 100-run first-innings lead. That advantage made Australia the favourites going into the final phase of the match.
South Africa wobbled in their second innings at 95 for three, but Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder rescued the side. Rickelton made 101 off 219 balls and Mulder scored 115 off 221 balls. Their partnership set Australia a target of 288 and gave South Africa the platform to attack on the final day.
Rabada changed the game on the final morning. He dismissed Matt Renshaw and Marnus Labuschagne in the opening over, and Travis Head soon followed. The Australian collapse was triggered, and Harmer took full advantage. The off-spinner bowled with relentless accuracy, maintained a probing length and used subtle changes in flight and trajectory to keep the batters guessing.
Harmer had earlier told SEN Cricket that a lead of 120 would be defendable, 150 would be par and anything above 200 would be gold. His second-innings performance backed up that assessment. He tore through Australia's middle and lower order, and the tourists were bowled out for 111. Harmer finished with match figures of 10 for 120, his first ten-wicket haul in Test cricket.
The final wicket summed up his control. Harmer landed the ball on leg stump, turned it away from left-handed Josh Hazlewood and hit the middle and off stumps. It ended Australia's innings and sealed South Africa's victory. Harmer was named Player of the Match.
Speaking after the game, Harmer said the pitch did not offer as much turn as expected on days four and five. He added that he asks himself whether he has bowled well enough, and that in Port Elizabeth he was desperate for wickets. At Newlands, he focused on control in the first innings and then exploited conditions in the second. He said it felt good to bowl freely and do his own thing.
Rabada's contribution was equally important. His early strikes on the final morning gave South Africa momentum and exposed Australia's top order. He also became the fastest bowler to 350 Test wickets, overtaking Dale Steyn. The combination of Rabada's pace and Harmer's spin proved too much for Australia.
South Africa's victory was a complete team effort. The top order set up the first innings, Rickelton and Mulder rebuilt the second, and the bowlers finished the job. Australia had the better of the early exchanges after taking a 100-run lead, but South Africa's resilience and the final-day bowling display turned the match around. The series win will be remembered for Harmer's prediction, his match-winning spell and Rabada's decisive burst.
